Manchester "Smoke Free" Last Drag Sunday 24 June 2007 8pm - late Pure Space Cafe Bar, Manchester. The Manchester Pub and Club Network are pleased to hold a charity night in support of a New 'smoke free' Manchester. On Sunday 24th June 2007 England will join Ireland, Scotland and Wales in backing this campaign. In an unusual turn of events Manchester's Last Drag' will see licensees from across Manchester Pubs and Clubs come together with city council officials and Greater Manchester Police at Manchester's contemporary open air roof top garden to show their support for a new smoke free city. The night promises to be a fantastic network opportunity with entertainment by a local jazz band, The Matt Nickson Trio and refreshments will be sponsored by The Famous Grouse, Cointreau and Asahi Andrew O'Dwyer chair of the Manchester Pub and Club Network and director of Pure Space Cafe bar said 'Manchester is a leading UK city and as such we should be the one's to set an example, licensees are aware that if a smoke free city is to work in the North West then they need to be right behind the campaign from the outset and let their customers know they will not tolerate breaking the law. Phil Burke Spokesperson for the Network said the night promises to be a fun and entertaining evening, to have all licensees and manager in one spot will send a good clear message out to everyone on how important it is to stop smoking especially on licence premises Burke also states that Manchester has a reputation as the smoking capital of the UK, each day 14 people in greater Manchester die from smoking related diseases and 20 children take up the habit'. We would like to thank Manchester Based CityCo and all the drinks sponsors for their continuous support in making this event possbile , the event is open to all Cllr Pat Karney, Director of Smoke Free Greater Manchester said: We have to be ready to implement this legislation across Greater Manchester from the Sun 1st July 2007 and this will help us start saving people from smoking related diseases. We are one of the smoking capitals of the UK and we bury 14 people everyday because of smoking related diseases. We want the young people of Greater Manchester to grow up in a Smoke Free world". Manchester Smoke Free fully supports this event in getting a positive message out to all, and myself and the Smoke Free team will be on hand to listen and answer any questions or concerns on the Night.
