You can visit Angel Street in the Northern Quarter. It's nothing spectacular but did inspire the M People song.
Simply Red's Mick Hucknall once owned Barca in Castlefield, whilst both The Bee Gees and The Stone Roses' John Squire grew up on Keppel Road in Chortlon. Barry Gibb recently bought their old home and there's a brilliant documentary you can buy about it here. Dry Bar boasts a musical history with both Liam Gallagher and Shaun Ryder being barred. Shaun for firing a gun, as detailed in the film 24 Hour Party People, which can be bought here. The Hacienda has sadly been demolished to make way for luxury apartments, as has The Boardwalk, where Oasis played their first gig. You can often bump into musicians in the likes of The Temple (popular with Elbow, Badly Drawn Boy & I Am Kloot), Lava (popular with Andy Rourke from the Smiths amongst many) and Atlas (a fave for James frontman Tim Booth). Stone Roses/Primal Scream bassist Mani sometimes DJ's at Po Na Na amongst many others, whilst Inspiral Carpets keyboardist, Clint Boon can always be caught DJ'ing around town (South being his most popular haunt). Clint also sang a song about Dry, Atlas and Dukes 92. You may also be interested in Beasley Street, which punk poet John Cooper Clarke famously sang about. Most bars have jukeboxes crammed full with Manchester bands, Cask, Temple, Corbieres, Odd and Knott being the best. For the more commercial bands like New Order, Bee Gees, Simply Red and M People, you can't do any better than the rather aptly named Commercial pub near the Science & Industry Museum, or The Rising Sun In the evening, check out The Brickhouse, 5th Avenue or 42nd Street for the best Manchester indie and rock tracks. |
